Different Faux Wood Plantation Shutters In Honolulu

March 02, 2020

While there are many faux wood plantation shutters available in Honolulu, they don’t have the same quality.  While some faux wood shutters will last forever without warping, cracking, or yellowing, other faux wood shutters will start to wear down in just a few years.

It might be difficult to understand the pros and cons of the different faux wood plantation shutters Honolulu.  But as you learn about the different types of faux wood, it will be easier to tell which interior shutter is built to last.

The following list examines the different kinds of faux wood shutters in Honolulu and rates them from the least ideal to the most durable and stylish:

Vinyl Shutters:

Some shutter products that use vinyl are disguised as a faux wood covering.  But don’t be deceived, vinyl is different from faux wood. Vinyl’s plastic look and shiny finish can be difficult to blend with a decor style, unlike quality faux wood or real wood shutters.  These treatments may be one of the most inexpensive plantation shutter products around, but that’s because they can warp and fade.

Vinyl can also be affected by heat. It’s not unusual to see vinyl window treatments melt or yellow due to extensive exposure to the sun. Since these treatments warp, fade, and have poor insular traits, vinyl shutters do not provide much energy-efficiency to your home -- especially if the louvers are hollow.

  • Benefits:

Cheapest of the non-wood plantation shutters.

  • Drawbacks:

Looks like plastic; frail materials; hollow louvers; little energy efficiency; will often warp, crack or fade.

Synthetic Wrapped Product:

A step up from vinyl shutters are wrapped plantation shutters.  These coverings are made of pressed wood, wood chip components, or glued MDF, and then covered with a synthetic, vinyl, or plastic coating. The shutters are heavier and can seem much more like a traditional wood plantation shutter than their vinyl counterparts.

However, synthetic wrapped shutters have many drawbacks. The pressed grain under the wrapping can be extremely porous, leaving the window treatment exposed to humidity and moisture. It’s a common occurance to see a warped or splintered louver or learn that the synthetic wrapping has chipped or peeled away.  Also, wrapped shutters aren’t custom-fitted for non-standard shaped windows like arches or circles.

  • Benefits:

Heavier than vinyl shutters; can resemble real wood.

  • Drawbacks:

Not suitable for high humidity or high moisture areas. Will absorb moisture and humidity. Aren't moisture resistant; outer layer can chip away; warps or splinters easily; no specialty shapes.

Solid Extruded Faux Wood Shutters:

Plantation shutters made from solid extruded faux wood are more durable than any of the other non-wood plantation shutters.  Because the synthetic material infuse themselves throughout the shutter, they create durable, solid louvers that are more resistant warping.  You will also see that these shutters are more durable and will perform much more like real wood shutters. Solid extruded faux wood shutters are also able to be custom-crafted to fit every window shape and size -- even arches.

But a solid extruded shutter is only as good as its faux wood recipe.  Some recipes create a fragile shutter, which can be cracked or chipped during installation. If the faux wood doesn’t include a UV inhibitor, then the shutter will fade and yellow when exposed to sunlight. Some manufacturers need to paint their louvers, which also invite chipping and yellowing over time.

  • Benefits:

More substantial product that works like a basswood plantation shutter.

  • Drawbacks:

Quality depends on the mixture of the faux wood composite.
