How To Decide Between Different Types Of Window Treatments

Window shades, blinds, and plantation shutters–oh my! The number of available window treatments may seem staggering when picking one for your Honolulu home. Knowing the pros and cons of each covering will help you determine the ideal treatment for your living space and unique needs. Keep reading to investigate the different types of window treatments and how they may increase your enjoyment of your windows.

The Pros And Cons Of Interior Shutters

Frequently known as “plantation shutters,” interior shutters are made of sturdy materials. They have pivoting panels set in a frame attached to your window. Each panel has a row of tiltable louvers. You can angle the louvers and open and shut the panels to your ideal position.

The Pros

Because of their sturdy construction, plantation shutters are able to supply every benefit you want from a window covering:

  • An elegant architectural feature for windows
  • Neutral colors to match your decor
  • Complete privacy
  • Outstanding management over sunlight
  • Easy operation
  • Unmatched longevity and incredible durability from Polywood® shutters
  • Perfect fit for windows of all shapes and sizes
  • Improved energy efficiency over other window treatments
  • Increased home resale value
  • Pet- and child-safe
  • Multiple custom options to further enhance how your shutters function

The Cons

Interior shutters aren’t right for everyone. If you want a soft textile on your windows or would like to add a splash of color, you’ll want to look at some different types of window treatments in Honolulu.

The Pros And Cons Of Window Shades

Window shades come in various styles, but they generally all feature a section of fabric attached above the window. Grab the bottom of the shade and lower or raise it to reveal or cover your window. You may also get motorized shades. You control these with a remote control, wall button, or even a voice command or an app if you get smart shades. You may also schedule smart shades to lower or raise according to a schedule. Motorized shades provide incredible convenience.

The Pros

Window shades and automatic shades can do a terrific job of impeding light and the view into your home. Their biggest appeal is the many styles they come in. Choose from various:

  • Colors
  • Motifs
  • Fabrics
  • Transparency levels

The various window shades have their own advantages as well. Roller shades give you a minimalist feel. Cellular shades are energy efficient. Motorized shades of all styles provide easier management over daylight and home comfort for windows of various sizes.

The Cons

Window shades can’t provide the sturdiness of rigid window treatments and are typically difficult to clean. Their materials will in time wash out from exterior light or may become damaged, grow mold, or become stained.

Window shades also give you fewer options in managing exterior light and privacy than interior shutters. They can leave gaps at the edges or enable shadows to appear if your lights are switched on at night.

The Pros And Cons Of Window Blinds

Window blinds have a series of long slats built from a rigid material that you lower over your windows to conceal them. You may also rotate the slats open or shut for added command over exterior light.

The Pros

Blinds are designed impede exterior light and visibility into your Honolulu home, but their quality and material determine how effective they are. While some blinds are considered flimsy, premium wood and faux-wood blinds offer enhanced durability and added benefits like:

  • Smooth performance
  • Longevity
  • Visual appeal

The Cons

Even the most well-built blinds have some disadvantages. They can let light in around the sides or shift in a strong breeze, exposing your home’s interior to outside viewers. They give you minimal insulation and, due to their construction, won’t hold up as well as sturdier shutters. They can also be challenging to clean.

The Pros And Cons Of Drapes

Drapes are made of long, cascading fabric designed to conceal windows. Their material is generally heavier than curtains and backed for better insulation and darkening ability. Drapes might come in a pair of panels that you draw back from the middle or one large panel that you pull across your window from the side. They may suspend from and move along a rod or a track.

The Pros

Heavy drapes excel at obstructing air movement and sunlight when drawn. They are available in many different textures, patterns, and colors to coordinate with your decor. They provide a graceful, traditional look many families like.

The Cons

Drapes can have a formal, stiff appearance that doesn’t suit everyone. They can seem luxurious on tall windows but can be awkward to operate unless you have motorized options. Drapes also don’t give you many options for managing light and privacy–they’re either open or shut.

The complete plantation shutter process, beginning with your initial consultation through finishing your shutter installation, usually takes around four to six weeks on average. The reason it takes this long is because our goal is to build the perfect shutters for your windows. To do that, we need to take precise measurements, use advanced software to design them, assemble your custom shutters manually, and deliver them to you prior to installation. Shutters made from real wood will usually take longer because of the extra steps needed to stain and treat the wood.

It will take some time, but it’s an investment that’s well worth it.

Far and away our most popular shutter offerings are our classic white Polywood® faux wood plantation shutters, and Ovation® hardwood shutters.

To get more specific, the most popular shutter configuration features includes a 3.5” louver, smooth finish, and an interior-mount Z-frame. If those words don’t mean anything to you, that’s ok. We’ll be happy to demonstrate what all that means in person. Schedule your complimentary home consultation and we’ll help you figure out what would work best in your home.
