When Is It Time To Replace Those Outdated Vertical Blinds In Honolulu?

August 13, 2019

In the 1970’s, homeowners in Honolulu looked for a window covering that would sufficiently cover large, picture windows and sliding glass doors. So, vertical -- or Venetian -- blinds became a practical window covering that used long vinyl stats that hung loosely from a track.

However, now that we are firmly situated in the 21st century, these useful treatments are starting to look like old-fashioned relics that should stay in the past. Instead, there are more stylish and more energy-efficient treatments that help you update your windows and replace those vertical blinds.

The Trouble With Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds seemed innovative when they were new, but now we see them for their problems rather than their advantages.

  • The slats bang together. With a modest draft from an air conditioner -- or even when someone brushes by -- they clang together.

  • They are brittle. You can easily pull off a slat or snap a vane so they won’t rotate or open right.

  • They show fingerprints and dust. Vertical blinds are usually composed of vinyl that yellows, fades, and can become stained with moisture or dirt.

  • They do not cover your windows. Because these window coverings sway and break so easily, it’s not uncommon to see light peek through the sides or the gap from a broken slat.

What Are Some Better Window Treatments Than Vertical Blinds?

To improve your antiquated vertical blinds, you have plenty of great options:

  • Plantation Shutters: Unlike vertical blinds, plantation shutters are always trending. With their thick louvers, plantation shutters will stop sun glare and add privacy. They completely seal off the window so they won’t sway in the breeze or break easily. If you use a faux wood plantation shutter, like our Polywood® shutters, then you will also get an extra layer of energy efficiency.

  • Cellular shades: Cell shades can take over for your vertical blinds on big windows, as they are are constructed from a fabric material that modernizes your decor. Available in a variety of colors, these treatments can block outside light by pulling top-down or bottom-up. Cell shades also might use sheer material so natural light can brighten the room when closed. Find more options for window shades in Honolulu.

  • Panel Tracks: Panel tracks act like vertical blinds, as they drape down from a suspended track. These wood or fabric panels aren’t shown to have the same problems as vertical blinds though, as the panels are bigger and sturdier.
